Puzzle Description:

Following the tradition of many other religious leaders, Patrick introduced his flock to the "Spirit" through spirits...which is why we now enjoy Irish Cream, Benedictine, Dom Perignon, trappist beer, and many other alcohols!

Of course Patrick did not introduce Irish Cream to the world (Bailey's was introduced in 1974, although that wasn't necessarily the first one). However, Benedictine monks did introduce the world to Benedictine (as in Brandy and Benedictine) and Dom Perignon (named after one of the monks). Trappist Beers are also brewed in monasteries. Don't even get me started on all the wonderful cheeses created in monasteries which are best enjoyed with the local spirit (Oka cheese comes to mind). :) Happy St. Paddy's day everyone!

I don't have much first-hand knowledge about monks. But I could give you some inside stories about a few convents ;)

Well, it's a former lifetime. Let's just say that the Holy Spirit might call women with honorable skill sets, but cooking might not be one of those skills. At one convent, we joked that as a form of penance, we would eat our own cooking. We heard about all those monks brewing tasty beverages and enjoying cheeses. In my opinion, those monks don't suffer enough ;)

Heather, in the early 1970s my parents went to New Zealand to visit cousins who had emigrated there. These cousins had mentioned that they missed Oka cheese, so my dad went to the monastery in Oka, which is on the outskirts of Montreal where we lived, and bought an *enormous* crated Oka wheel to bring as a gift. The last he saw of it was when it was taken off the plane in Fiji, which was very hot. The cheese never made it to New Zealand. He laughed every time he thought of the pervasive smell that would have been coming out of that crate a few days later...
