"ah" sound, for russian brother(as in bratwurst).... and your phonetics are off with potato, as po- (not pot-)is the first syllable ;)lol. "poh-tay-toe", "pah-tah-toe".

I've never met anyone who says pah-tah-toe.

Sorry - I'm not putting it well into phonetics - there's an old Gershwin song - "You like Potato, I like Potahto / You like Tomato, I like Tomahto / Potato, Potahto, Tomato, Tomahto / Let's call the whole thing off." It talks about dialects (regional and class)....

I know the song well. I've just never heard anyone ever pronounce it pahtahtoe. Have you? "Would you like baked pahtahtoe, fries, or pilaf?"

The song was published in 1937 and maybe they talked differently then.

I could imagine a snooty New England family pronouncing it this way, when they're having potahtoes at Mahtha's Vineyard.

Can't say I've every heard potahto, but I've certainly heard tomahto....
