FYI, links that are put in the puzzle's description never work.

You should always put them in the comment section, like this:

P.S. I still don't know what this is.

It is a mid 1950's era test pattern that was shown on broadcast television anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes before the day's programming was aired.

If you Google "TV test pattern" you'll find many variations of test patterns used, including the one commonly known as the "Indian Head Pattern".

The closely spaced lines helped to fine-tune the picture tube's focus, the grayscales aided in adjusting contrast and the circular patterns let you know if the azimuths (vertical and horizontal) were properly set.

For me, though it was a promise of good things to come.

I remember the Indian head one from when the stations would go off the air late at night... it always had an electronic "hum" or "squeal", too, and we would be sad that there was nothing to watch until the next morning.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

This puzzle is quite a bit larger and more "tedious" than I personally enjoy but I created it as a companion to my puzzle #20170: After the sign-off.
