"naz-DROH-vee-ah"

idk, Al....I was pleased enough with the beer that I lost sight of everything else. you could sample some at the reception. 4 different ones, with names like "Hoppily Ever After", "Sweetie Wheatie", Wedding Stout", "Nuptu-Ale". lol the couple live in Illinois and the wedding was here in St Louis....so they were worried as hell about the drive across state lines with 200 bottles of beer. funny!

I actually know that one, from my Granny (Grandpa's 2nd wife). According to family lore, Granny Ewa (EV-ah) escaped from Russia in the '20s snd spoke 7 languages. I know she spoke English, Russian, Polish, Portuguese, and Romanian. I always knew her as Russian, but when we had a membership to Ancestry.com, she was listed as being from Bialystok, Poland.

That's the first time I've seen "Na Zrowie" in writing. Apparently, Russians say "Za vashe zdorovie" but the last word is pronounced the same.

close, K. it's close. and "vash" (actually looks more like "BaW"--sorry, don't have Cyrillic on this keyboard) means "your" ......Ha(or "na") is "to", "for", "on", etc...depending how it's used. no way to even closely resemble zdorovie...but it means "health"

while I'm thinking of it....I know many polish fled into russia during WWII. I wouldn't doubt it if some did in the beginning of the first one also. not a neat place to run though, as the romanov's got overthrown before the end of WWI.

smart lady! runs in the fam, huh?

no no....plenty of other beer and drinks. Anheuser Busch brewery was literally across the street from the church. and before eating, the priest did a blessing then gave the groom hell for bringing in sweetie wheatie when the "king of beers" was just across the street. the whole hall laughed!

Once, on a business trip to St. Louis, I asked for a local beer, and they offered me a Budweiser. Not what I had in mind!

Re: #11: Sadly, Granny was only related by marriage. She certainly made an impression on me when I was a young girl.

While driving with all those bottles of beer in the car did they sing "200 bottles of beer in the car, 200 bottles of beer......."
#19: Kurt Kowalczyk (bahabro) on Sep 23, 2012
hahahaha....if they did, I'd surely have to ditch the car and start hitchhiking if I were along for the ride
