Puzzle Description:

I'm definitely no artist, but I wanted to try something like this. didn't turn out so neat though.... was supposed to be sad angel. at least it's kinda a fun solve :)

Actually Kurt i think it's kind of a neat image,i can definitely make it out,and it has a certain "Je ne sais quoi" about it that i find appealing. :)

Ha,ha!

I can see the profile now. I thought it was some bearded dude with a blue eye, about to catch some gnarly waves. :)

It also requires a good bit of color logic and edge logic, so I can see why some newb would mark it as requiring guessing. :P

"color logic", huh? sorry, didn't know you had a specific term for it....yes, a lot of color logic. I don't recall needing to use any edge logic though. don't forget that I'm a newb myself and I'm still getting used to the group's lingo and abbrev's, etc.

Kurt - the different logic techniques are detailed out on this page: http://webpbn.com/index.cgi?page=solving.html

After the line/color logic, all but the lower right of the puzzle will be solved (only black remaining). Here are my steps to finish (all steps may not be required, line logic in between).

Looking at column 40, if the 3 clue extends up to row 23 (which forces the 2 clue in R20C40-R21C40), then column 39 will be invalid. So R26C40 has to be black.

No matter how the 2 clue in column 40 is placed, R20C39 is always a dot.

Edge logic with the 2 clue in column 32 will make R25C32 a dot.

Look at column 34. Imagine that the "2 2 1" clues are as high as they could go such that the 1 clue would be at R26C34. This forces dots at R22C34 and R25C34. Look how this affects column 36. Notice that those dots force both R22C36 and R25C36 to be black which makes column 36 invalid. From this we can conclude that the 1 clue in column 34 must go in R29C34.

Found to be logically solvable by gator.

I think the image is quite artistic. The concept of a sad angel is rather unique. I like how you did the sun and the fluff on his wing. The solve was very enjoyable. The edge logic at the end wasn't too hard to figure out. People who don't know how to do edge logic should not rate on solvability. Oh well. Gator got rid of the question mark for you. :-)

I can see the angel now! But at first I thought I was looking at a sad woman sunbathing, being attacked by a giant crab. I still think it's a good puzzle, though!

thanks teresa and meg!

I liked this puzzle very much; it hints of a renaissance artist to me.

Thank you!

I like the image, I would rather think that she is asleep rather than sad, though. The wings are perfect protection from the sun. Thanks Al.

I think this is a great inage, very well done and fun to solve, thank you Kurt!

The image is nice, I thought I would find here a link to an oil painting of the image. good job creating it in PBN and not on canvas first.
