Puzzle Description:

Nerds does it take to change a light bulb? I am looking for the funniest and/or most clever answer here, so give it your best :D

#1: Marie-Louise Ambrey (marz71) on Mar 10, 2012 [HINT]

The only logic other than line logic that you need to do is a bit of smile logic near the end.
#2: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Mar 10, 2012 [SPOILER]
10-One to read the instructions
-one to figure out the equation for the necessary wattage
-eight to pick up the broken glass because the instructions didn't say that you have to screw the bulbs in and not push them in.:)
#3: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Mar 10, 2012 [SPOILER]
1 - he calls physical plant.

or

i - it's irrational to change light bulbs with mittens on.

one nerd and one computer...http://www.wikihow.com/Screw-in-a-Lightbulb
#5: Kadou (Kadou) on Mar 10, 2012
Eye-opening puzzle!

Depending on how long it takes you, you need at least a mouthful!

LOL, you are all giving great answers here, I laughed at every one of the comments so far. Kadou...LOL!

#7: Claudia (clau_bolson) on Mar 10, 2012 [SPOILER]
Now, this is from my experience: how many teenagers does it take to change a lightbulb? None, they just sit in the dark and wait for mum or dad to change it.
#8: John Smith (shorty_138706) on Mar 11, 2012
The answers varies, do any of the nerds have ADD?
#9: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 16, 2012
None. Climbing up onto the ladder gives us nosebleeds.
#10: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 16, 2012
I've got this idea for a prototype bulb that won't require changing.
#11: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 16, 2012
The computer screen provide plenty of light.
#12: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 16, 2012
Oh, the bulb is out? I just thought my glasses were dirty.
#13: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 16, 2012
Hey, it's my parents' basement. Bulb changing is their responsibility.
#14: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 16, 2012
We'll change it as soon as this quest is completed.
#15: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 16, 2012
OK, I'll change it if you cook me a Hotpocket.
#16: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 17, 2012
Well, according to Heisenberg it is impossible to know both how many are changing the bulb and exactly how quickly they are doing it.
#17: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 17, 2012
It depends, are we treating light as a wave or as a particle?
#18: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 17, 2012
Quantum mechanics tells us there is a very small probability that the light bulb will suddenly appear in the socket. I'm willing to wait.
#19: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 17, 2012
Step 1. Assume a spherical light bulb of radius 0.025 meters.
Step 2. If one applies 13.7 newton-meters of torque...
#20: Teresa K (fasstar) on Mar 19, 2012 [SPOILER]
Marie-Louise, I really enjoyed this puzzle!

Kadou, that's a lot of nerds!

Brian, your insight into nerds is amazing! You have just described my son Chris (and a majority of webpbn puzzlers I'm sure). I love having a nerd around. I'll gladly change the lightbulb, and fix the hot pockets for the nerd, cuz I know he will fix my computer and anything else that's broken. :-)
#21: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 19, 2012 [SPOILER]
I have long ago learned to embrace my nerdyness. Nerdy and proud.
#22: Marie-Louise Ambrey (marz71) on Mar 20, 2012
Nerds are intelligent, and I like that :)
#23: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Mar 20, 2012
3...one to hold up the light bulb and....
two to turn the ladder.
#24: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Mar 20, 2012
Tom - nah. Not enough upper body strength. Although three might be the ideal number for a lighting-maintenance-robot engineering team.
#25: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Mar 20, 2012
I thought that too--it would take 4 or 5 nerds to pick up and rotate a nerd-bearing ladder, and then you have the tripping hazard of so many other feet. It would be far easier to attach swivel casters to the ladder. Then you only need two nerds: one to hold the bulb and the other to swing the ladder around.
#26: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Mar 20, 2012
nopers Kristen, that won't work...then you would need another nerd to oil the casters
#27: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Mar 20, 2012 [SPOILER]
I like the idea of a light bulb changing robot. Let's see...

step 1: assume a spherical lightbulb. Oh wait, I did that already.
#28: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Apr 1, 2012 [SPOILER]
None? ...because screwing things in the dark isn't exactly their forte.
#29: Kristen Vognild (Kristen) on Apr 1, 2012
*snerk*
#30: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Apr 1, 2012
Good one David.
#31: Marie-Louise Ambrey (marz71) on Apr 1, 2012
Haha, David wins! :D
#32: Web Paint-By-Number Robot (webpbn) on Jul 13, 2012
Found to be logically solvable by gator.
#33: Wombat (wombatilim) on Feb 5, 2014
10:
1 to change the bulb and 1 to make stupid binary jokes.
#34: Kristen Vognild (Kristen) on Feb 5, 2014
:D
#35: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Feb 6, 2014
I agree with Wombat. Except that there's inevitably a third nerd lurking nearby who'll point out that it's actually in base three.

#36: BlackCat (BlackCat) on Aug 31, 2016
Tough to see at first. Good job for such a small space.
#37: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Sep 1, 2016
42
#38: Velma Warren (Shiro) on Jul 31, 2018
Clear illustration.
#39: Bill Eisenmann (Bullet) on Oct 12, 2021
These are FABULOUS! Let's bring it back!

<adult content warning>

How many nerds does it take to screw in a light bulb?

The usual two.

The mystery is how they get in there in the first place.
#40: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Oct 12, 2021
tee-hee!
#41: JoDeen Mozena (ozymoe) on Oct 13, 2021
My Grand said,"One...as long as he's magic like you, Mimi!"

Sometimes grandchildren just make a person's day, don't they?...although I'm now wondering if this one thinks I actually change lightbulbs by magic.

Most of the year I live in DisneyWorld. When the kids visit me, many times Tinkerbell leaves small gifts on the balcony for them. I've told them I know lots of magic which they will learn about as they get older and are ready to do magic of their own. I plan to segue this into life lessons about love, sharing and caring (and how things one does can change the world...or maybe at least one person's world at a time) That's real magic...which takes practice and persistence as well as becoming a person who sees past appearances. Lol...got my work cut out for me...right?

In the mean time, every day is magical in one way or another!
#42: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Oct 14, 2021
I love you JoDeen! <3
#43: Yonah Kondor (yokon965) on Jun 23, 2023
Unsure, but certainly fewer than if it was a heavy bulb.
#44: Harry Plantinga (hplan) on Jun 23, 2023
None. We use LED bulbs.
#45: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Jun 25, 2023
Zero. Put a kiddie pool under the light. Float a boat with a tall mast in the pool. Attach the new bulb to the top of the mast and allow the Coriolis effect to slowly screw the bulb in for you. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy. Oh, did I mention that this only works in the southern hemisphere.
#46: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Jul 22, 2023
That seems awfully inconvenient. You'd have to move the entire room to the northern hemisphere just to unscrew it again, once it burns out.
#47: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Jul 23, 2023
Hm. If you could reverse gravity to keep the water in the kiddie pool, then you could just turn the room upside down to unscrew the lightbulb instead of moving everything to the other hemisphere. Though I'm concerned about whether reversing gravity might impact the direction of the Coriolis effect.
#48: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Jul 23, 2023
either way, it seems like a lot of bother
#49: Bill Eisenmann (Bullet) on Jul 24, 2023
True story - one summer in college I worked construction as a carpenter. A light bulb in a closet burned out on a Saturday. Since it was a union job, we carpenters WERE NOT ALLOWED to change the bulb; we had to call the boss, who called the electricians, who sent the electrical foreman and an electrician to change it. We knew it would be several hours, so we changed it, worked until they showed up, then put the dead one back in so the electricians could change it.

EVERY WORD IS TRUE!

Scary!
#50: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Jul 24, 2023
Jinkies
#51: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Jul 25, 2023
Having had a couple of my projects built with union labor, that does not surprise me in the least!!
#52: Joanne Firla (JoFirla) on Jul 26, 2023
#45, very creative.
#46, hysterical retort!
