Puzzle Description:

A juke box. The term is thought to have orignated from the old English word "jouk" which meant to dance wildly and was adopted into the dialects of African slaves in the Caribbean and southern USA. Then in the USA's south, during the early/mid 1900's, "juke joints" sprang up. These were unsavory bars in out-of-the way places where people went to listen to jazz music played by "juke bands." When coin-operated music boxes were invented, they replaced the live bands and hence "juke boxes." My 80-year-old mother can tell of a juke joint in her home town in South Louisiana where Cajun music was played. She was sternly warned off of going there by her parents.

Loved doing the puzzle Synthia. And thank you for the background in where the name came from. I too have thrown a coin or two into one of these machines. Brings back fond memories.

great image. ditto Liz. Did your mom ever go there? Sometimes when parents forbid too much, it makes it a place you have to go. (well, at least for rebels like me)

Thanks for the history lesson. I remember my parents talking about the juke joints. My mom grew up in Missouri and jazz was big down there. It is a very good image!

I recognized this early on and it is a great illustration. My father came out of WWII as an electrician and he set up a TV & repair shop. He serviced all the boxes in upper Wisconsin. Really great memories.
