Puzzle Description:

Tons of garbage was left behind after the festival. I know this is pretty hard to see but it's a six pack plastic ring with two pull tabs laying on the grass.

Carol: 4 hours till closing. I'm not sure where to go next, but I'm stuck.
I don't want to mark it as needing guessing if I'm not sure. Cn you help me. I've completed all the black and have what looks like 6 to be green oval forms.

#3: Carol Brand (KarylAnn) on Sep 19, 2010
Don't worry about it Jota, Tom...I'm not worried about the contest.

good puzzle - some difficulties at times, but only need logic - no guessing needed (after the 6 larger items are started - concentrate on the 3-7-3 columns and the rest is a piece of cake.

No problem, Tom. Thanks Paul.

I also finished the puzzle without any problems once I saw the pattern... I would also like to say that the promoters of Woodstock cleaned up all the garbage and paid all the debts. They even gave refunds to the people who had purchased tickets because so many got in for free! It's amazing to read about the festival. I have really enjoyed this contest. Thank you everybody.

Paul, I'm looking at those 3-7-3 columns, and I'm still stuck. I see three places where the 7 can go. If I look ahead several moves, I can eliminate one of the three possibilities, but then I'm stuck. I'm guessing the 7 will go in the middle slot.

Aha! Very challenging but satisfying solve, Carol. Recognizable once I read the description.

Found to be logically solvable by Gator.
#13: Gator (Gator) on Sep 20, 2010 [HINT]
I used edge logic on the bottom row to make R33C22 - R33C26 dots. This allows you to do some more line logic that will further constrain where the 5 clues can go in the top row. Using edge logic, you will be able to see that there are only two places the two 5 clues can go. This enables you will fill in 2 cells of each 5 clue. The same kind of constraint will be available on the bottom row also.

After a lot more line logic, you should have most of the puzzle complete except for the top left. On the first column, I looked at where the 3 clue could go, and it could only go in one place (R16C1 - R18C1). Solves normally from there.

Quite a tricky puzzle.

Thanks, Gator for the logic explanation and thanks, Michelle and Teresa!

I'm surprised no one said anything about the pull tabs. They were so convenient (no more can openers) but so dangerous and environmentally unfriendly. My friends and I used to open the can and put the tab in the can right away and then make sure we didn't drink it! People used to make jewelry, curtains, etc. out of them too!

I agree with Michelle...this really was a fun contest. I also enjoyed revisiting the era. I was fourteen and asked my parents to take me...I received a firm NO.
#15: Jota (jota) on Sep 21, 2010
I had to follow Gator's hints to be able to solve it. Nice!
#16: Carol Brand (KarylAnn) on Sep 22, 2010
I'm glad you were able to solve it, Jota! Thanks!

No guessing for me either - ditto Gator on the edge logic top and bottom. The rest was pretty much picky counting.

I recognized the pull tabs right away. We also used to put them into the cans, generally, immediately followed by a stern warning from Mom that we would cut our lips or swallow one.

Chiming in very late indeed...
The black patterns were a good start. And the pattern of/around the green circles caught my eye.
Still, when you say "Woodstock", 6-pack plastic ain't what comes to mind...
hehe

Geez, this puzzle is over 10 years old already! lol, CB Paul. Glad you were able to solve it.
