So this is the result of feeding the entire contents of the forum to wordle.net.

Well, after a lot of fiddling. I eliminated a couple hundreds common words like "and", "a" and "enough". I did some stemming, so "puzzle" and "puzzles" are both counted together.

Just noticed that I didn't merge "thank" with "thanks" or fix the capitalization of "ok". Oh well.

Until I tried making one, I hadn't realized how much manipulation goes into them. I could, for example, have eliminated "make" as a common word, since many instances are probably just things like "It doesn't make any difference to me", but by leaving it in I'm giving perhaps undue emphasis to webpbn as a place where people make things.

New version, with more stemming and some other fixes:

Just to emphasize how much manipulation goes into these things, here's a raw version for comparison:

That's funny! You'd think the program would be smart enough to leave out articles and prepositions.
#6: Gator (Gator) on May 9, 2011
Very cool!
#7: Teresa K (fasstar) on May 9, 2011
How fun! I like the first one.

Hey, Gator, Jota, and Tom, we're in there! You too, Sarah and Bugaboo (if you squint). :-D
#8: Liz P (lizteach) on May 9, 2011
Neato.

The last one made me smile. "And the I to you" too!

Don't forget Jan & Adam. I thought I also saw "qwerty" in the top image, but that might've been "lovely" :D
#10: Byrdie (byrdie) on May 9, 2011
Just an observation: The first one says "pretty Adam" and the second says "bad Adam."

This is such a cool thing. Does the size of the font represent the frequency of words? If that is the case, mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint
#12: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on May 9, 2011
What can I say? I am "pretty bad." :-)
#13: Jan Wolter (jan) on May 10, 2011
Yes, size of font indicates frequency of the word. Placement and color of words is random.

I later noticed a switch on the wordle web site that makes it eliminate common words, but I had already done it manually. It doesn't do stemming, I had to do that manually.

The word cloud is basically a cloud of positivity.
#15: Sarah Andrews (sarah) on May 10, 2011
This is really cool.

Wow Jan! mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint this is such an interesting site. I, mootpoint always learn so much. Is there any difference between a wordle and a word cloud asked mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint? Cloud of positivity? mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint

I'll add some for Brian. mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint mootpoint :)
#18: Liz P (lizteach) on May 10, 2011
LOL @ Brian.
#19: Jan Wolter (jan) on May 10, 2011
I think "word cloud" is a general term, and wordle is a specific website that generates them.

I don't expect to re-run this in the future, since I doubt if there'd be substantive differences. If I ever do, I might just have to add "mootpoint" to the stop list.

I suppose I could word cloud individual users...nah, why go there?
#20: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on May 10, 2011
Thank you Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah
#21: Jota (jota ) on May 25, 2011
I love it! Thanks!

There's another site that does this sort of thing, but adds two more visualizations. The Correlation Wheel looks especially interesting. http://***textisbeautiful.net***/

This link has died and gone to spam hell.

Here is what the Correlation Wheel looked like:

Free word cloud apps disappeared for a time from the web. They are back now, and here is a word cloud of this thread:

(I like the Manipulation Brian Correlation in the lower right -- very appropriate considering the giant MOOTPOINT in the middle)

Coolness!!

I had found the word-cloud image that Jan posted in #1, but I hadn't seen this thread.

When I am reading new postings in the Forum, it always bugs me when I reach the end and it dumps me into a nearly blank screen, so on the staging site for a while I had it set to show the word cloud image on that screen too, to make it less blank. Now, if I remember right, the staging site chooses randomly between showing the word cloud and showing the "find a random puzzle" page. (But it's been a while since I looked at that code, so I may be remembering it wrong.) Anyway, the plan is to ask about this in a forum thread at some point and then add something to that screen. I think it would be neat to have a webpbn word cloud there.
#26: JoDeen Mozena (ozymoe) on Sep 22, 2023
That would be really neat, Valerie...it's a work of art in itself!
#27: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Sep 22, 2023
Wow! That is weird. Why is my username so prominent?

Oh, I just found out. Read comments 11, 16, & 17

Too funny!
