excellent images :-) wow - i definitely pronounce these two words differently. with "sawed" i pronounce the a like the a in "law"...and with "sod" i pronounce the o like the a in "father".

Your example is interesting, Linda, because you pronounce the a sound in law and father differently, while I pronounce them the same, so I can't tell how sod and sawed are different for you.

I have the same situation as Linda ... it's actually a pretty classic dialect difference in linguistics, though we usually use the example of caught vs. cot. Some people pronounce those two words exactly the same, while others differentiate the vowels. You might also see the same difference in bought/bot.

That's so interesting, Lizzy. I pronounce them all the same. Is it more of an "awe" vs "ah"?

Teresa, that's a good way of spelling out the difference! I kept thinking of the different IPA* symbols but awe/ah is a good representation. The shorter words (sod, cot, bot) have the ah sounds.

*That's International Phonetic Alphabet, not India Pale Ale :)
