What? You've never heard it? "Puffing a cigarette at a pear" has been around for like, ever! It means to perform a task or job that you misheard and thus are doing wrong. The saying is derived from a mishap at a hotel when a zealous new gofer heard a high profile visitor give him a very odd request. The guest was a heavy smoker and a litterbug, so there were cigarette butts all over the balcony he shared with a few other rooms. The employee didn't know that one of the other guests irately scolded the smoker earlier that day for the mess, saying such things as, "You leave them everywhere, and you don't even put them out! You're gonna start a fire!" Now the smoker had quite a mumble in his speech, so he wasn't always easy to understand. Therefore, when he gestured at some cigarettes, he told the gofer, "Do something about 'Smokey the bear'", the sarcasm was lost and the gofer understood it as, "Do something about smokin' a pear." The gofer fetched a pear, lit one of his own cigs, and puffed the smoke right onto the fruit. The guest was so confused, but once the misunderstanding was cleared up, the story somehow spread and now we have an idiom from it.

And if anyone actually believed that tall tale, we would probably have fun playing Balderdash together.
