If you can flip the source photo upside down, it can help you to see the shapes and angles better. People get a preconceived notion of how to draw faces (and other ordinary shapes), and by changing the orientation, you take away "face" and you're left with a series of lines and shapes. See "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" for more techniques.

It also helps to step away from the screen, if you have the photo next to your puzzle, so you can see which parts need to be tweaked.
