Puzzle Description:

I couldn't think of anything for WCP#64 but this and I couldn't decide if it was worth the entry. So, I let it sit for awhile and now its just bugging me to have "unpublished" in my file. enjoy

Nice pattern?? It's a swastika! It's so racist I can't believe you would actually make a puzzle that's so offensive to so many people.
#4: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Aug 14, 2010 [SPOILER]
It is not racist.. it's a symbol of good luck and its been used as such since as early as 560b.c. Unfortunately the Nazi Germans used it to stand out as a pure and "good" race which obviously backfired on them since its now banned in all parts of Germany. I did not mean to offend anyone by this. Perhaps if those who find it offensive would educate themselves on it instead of prejudice against it, things would be so much easier. But then, what would a world be without some chaos created by the diversity we've fought so hard for?! Personally, I prefer brown hair and green eyes so I'll continue to support the chaos. :)I apologize for offending you.

I am not offended by the pattern. But I am surprised at the colors used. I know that this pattern has been used for centuries and is still being used all over Europe and Asia as a symbol of their faith, but it isn't the only part of their sculptures. You could have made this a beautiful piece if you included some of the other aspects of the patterns used in other countries.

Ask anyone who survived a German concentration camp if they need to be "educated".
#7: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Aug 15, 2010
A ... i'm glad you got it out of your unpublished file
#8: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Aug 15, 2010
Thanks Tom. As for jmk, thanks for reminding us as to why I had it in mind for WCP #64..
#9: sanane samanye (maceraseven) on Aug 15, 2010
sieg heil!!! this one is not a nazi swastika. it should be rotated 45 degress.
#10: Jota (jota) on Aug 15, 2010
It's offensive.
#11: ant (agrest272) on Aug 15, 2010 [SPOILER]
how can this be considered offensive? it's just a swastika.. it's not like Alicia is declaring some sort of neo-nazism with it.. it's an image like you'd find in any WWII movie or museum, but I bet they don't offend you.
#12: Jota (jota) on Aug 15, 2010
And we all have fingers and yet if I show you my middle one ...
#13: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Aug 15, 2010
now now.... creators of beauty
#14: Diana W (aeris) on Aug 16, 2010 [SPOILER]
How is it offensive? I admit it would be offensive to walk around with it on your clothing or something, but I doubt Alicia is endorsing it. At webpbn we depict all kinds of images, positive and negative, happy and sad, and I always felt that they shouldn't be taken offensively (unless it's explicit or "for mature audiences"). Is it a bad thing to see this symbol and be reminded of the evils that occur when good men do nothing?

Anyways, I don't want to start a fight, but after reading the comments, how could I help but contribute to the discussion?
#15: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Aug 16, 2010
Thanks Ant and Diana..

For me this is a matter of perspective. I watched the World Trade Center being built and never had much use for what it represented. But the buildings were impressive. Since 9/11, I am disturbed any time I see an image of those buildings; not because of what they do or did represent but because it reminds me of the horrible imagery of that awful day.
Having seen pictures and films of what was done under the regime which chose this symbol as their banner, I am disturbed whenever I see it.
And, in a world where there are those who attempt to deny that what has been labelled "The Holocaust" never happened, well...
Also, I could see where this was going early on but the title (which I still don't get) led me to think that this might be a comment on the image.
Sorry for being so long-winded.
#17: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Aug 16, 2010
wow
#18: Alicia Snyder (prinny) on Aug 16, 2010
Thank you skweedle.. I agree that it is a matter of perspective. And I can understand it being a "disturbing" image moreso than an offensive one. As for the title, I was just saying it was too late to actually be an entry for the contest with which I originally intended it for. And its okay to be long winded when you make that much sense :)
#19: Robert Shields (skweedle) on Aug 16, 2010
Thanks for the clarification, Alicia. It was driving me nuts 8<O
#20: ant (agrest272) on Aug 17, 2010
i'm with you diane, it's not offensive if she's not endorsing it. in response to #12.. that's the exact opposite of the point i'm trying to make, since you're implying malice behind your middle finger. ah well, there's no arguing it really, I totally understand that seeing the image might bring forth feelings that upset you, i'm just saying that that doesn't make it offensive.
#21: Jota (jota) on Aug 17, 2010
Now Ant, that's a change from your comment 11 ("how can this be considered offensive?") Ypu now realize it can ( "I totally understand that seeing the image might bring forth feelings that upset you") According to Merriam-webster ; Offensive: giving painful or unpleasant sensations.
#22: Sarah Andrews (sarah) on Jan 22, 2011
Robert's comments are really good.

I'm not offended. It's true...it's all a matter of perspective. I guess it's because I'm theatre, through and through. It takes intent to offend.

On the other hand, no matter how well intentioned, and no matter how gentle the soul putting forth the conviction, when religious intolerance is displayed by right-to-lifers...I am intensely offended. Yet I respect life. I respect a person's right to make his/her own moral choice. Each must face his/her own God. When does life begin? When it is viable? Does the soul enter the body at birth? These questions/answers are not/should not be legislatable.
