In J K Rowling's world, witches and wizards all use wands, except for Hagrid, who uses a pink umbrella.#9: Bionerd (nieboo) on Aug 21, 2008
Tolkien wizards use staffs. Of course in Tolkien's world there are only five wizards, and only two of them appear in the story. One more, Radagast the Brown gets mentioned, but I don't think we find out if he has a staff. So the sample size is just two, not enough to draw any conclusions from.
I don't think I've seen Merlin depicted with either a staff or a wand. I don't think Ursula LeGuin giver her wizards any props in Earthsea either.
So I guess wands and staffs are pretty much optional.
Yeah. I forgot about harry potter. They weren't fairy like at all.#10: Gypso (Gypso) on Aug 21, 2008
