In Japanese, these swords are called the katana - the long sword, the wakizashi - the traditional companion in sets of two (or three) and sometimes swords come in sets of three that include a dagger length one called a tanto. Also, I just looked up pictures, and the katana (long swords) were all on top in all the images that came up in my search. Perhaps it doesn't matter, but I believe O'Conell-sensei got it right.
