Angry face
#1: Wombat (wombatilim) on May 21, 2010 [HINT]
This can be solved by logic alone.#2: Kylie :) (misty) on May 23, 2010 [SPOILER]
Once you've got as far as line logic will take you, the clues for rows 7 & 8 will have a contradiction if you attempt to place squares in columns 8 or 13.
Once that is finished, look at rows 16 & 17. Since all of the remaining clues across the top are 1s, there is only one combination that works for these two rows.
Smile logic finishes up at the bottom.
If they're angry, then why are they smiling?#3: Web Paint-By-Number Robot (webpbn) on May 23, 2010
Found to be logically solvable by Gator.#4: Gator (Gator) on May 23, 2010 [HINT]
#1 - that is how I solved it. On rows 16 & 17, this is the alternating smile logic.#5: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on May 24, 2010 [HINT]
smile logic worked for me ... thx Christine#6: Jan Wolter (jan) on Jul 1, 2010
I like that the top clues make a hat.#7: Kadou (Kadou) on Feb 24, 2012
I like the logic and the "hat"!#8: Andrew Schultz (blurglecruncheon) on Sep 30, 2022 [HINT]
I agree, the logic here is really clever for 16 and 17. I solved it by trial and error and then sat down and noticed the bit with 16/17.
I thought it might be worth it for those who do this by trial and error to have a detailed explanation if needed, just in case.
To break it down for the next person, you have a window from C7 to C14 and R16/R17 that you can work on after line logic. R16 has 2 2's and R17 has 1/2/1. There are all 1's in the remaining columns, so none of the 8 dots can be vertically adjacent. Also since there are 8 dots there must be 1 in each column.
But if we start with 2 in R16 at C7, then we would place the 1 in R17, the 2 in R16, the 2 in R17 and then need a space before placing the final 1, but we don't have that space. So we have to start with the 1 in R17 at C7. Line logic actually works for R16/17 after filling R17C7 because so many columns need 2 1's.
