Keep in mind most of the people then had more space to save stuff; and most things were fixable. With so much being made of plastic and fake wood, fixing isn't nearly as possible. Also, in many cases a part with shipping costs more than throwing something out and replacing. Thanks as always for the kind comments. BlackCat's observation about giving unwanted items to someone else reminded me about the Freecycle Network http://www.freecycle.org/ which great for giving AND receiving.
