Cute! Took a little guessing, but I had a lot of fun on this one!

Found to require some guessing by Gator.
#4: Gator (Gator) on Mar 26, 2010 [HINT]
You can use A LOT of edge logic to get most of the puzzle done, but when it gets towards the end, edge logic will fail you. It just seems very little more tweaking would make this completely solvable with logic.

When I tested it, there were some tricky spots in the interior where you had to go three or four steps deep to eliminate a couple spots, but I didn't think that counted as guessing. Which were the trouble areas?

Starting from where you got it Gator, if there were a black square at row 8, column 13 it would lead to an impossible situation.

So put a white dot there and the rest falls into place.
#8: Merili (merilinnuke) on Mar 26, 2010 [HINT]
I can't see #7.
Gator, r13c4, r12c5 & r9c4 are dots.
#9: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Mar 27, 2010
#7) you are right... about 11 moves down the road! This goes beyond advanced logic, since you have to look more than just 1-2 moves ahead.

#8) R13C4 requires 3 moves ahead to see why it is a dot.
R12C5 requires only 2 moves ahead to see why it is a dot (after placing a dot in R13C4).
R9C4 requires 3 moves ahead to see why it is a dot (after placing a dot in R12C5).

I am glad you didn't do the same theme as I did in puzzle #3370, or as Jota did in #3783, both of which had almost the exact same title.
#10: Merili (merilinnuke) on Mar 27, 2010 [HINT]
Adam, if the 3 of r13 starts from c4, there are two 1's in r12. I don't consider that 3 moves ahead. And r12c5 doesn't need the dotted r13c4.

Have to confess I wish I'd paid more attention before starting this puzzle. Looks like it would have had a cute solution, but I'm really not a fan of puzzles that require guessing of any sort.

From the picture I posted above (and help from Merili), place the 2 clue in column 5 in rows 12 and 13. This causes R12C6 to be a dot and R13C6 to be black. This makes column 6 invalid, so R12C5 is a dot. This is looking one move ahead.

Place the 3 clue in row 13 in columns 4 - 6. This causes both R12C4 and R12C6 to be black. This makes row 12 invalid, so R13C4 is a dot.

Looking at row 9, if one tries to put the 2 clue in columns 4 and 5, then R9C6 is a dot, and R13C5 is a dot (this is the 1 move look ahead). With the dot at R9C6, we would have to extend the 4 clue in column 6 down to row 13; however this causes row 13 to be invalid since the dot at R13C5 was placed. So R9C4 is a dot.

So, is this guessing or right on the edge of logically solvable?
#14: Teresa K (fasstar) on Mar 30, 2010 [HINT]
I think it's a little over the edge. :-)

I made a puzzle that I thought was easily logical, and many agreed, but Jan said he wasn't sure, and it is still marked as "some guessing required." But he didn't make an official ruling. Maybe he was waiting to see what you would rule on it, Gator. #7910.
#15: Gator (Gator) on Mar 30, 2010 [HINT]
That one is still in my saved pile. I'm still trying to find a way to tackle it better. I usually try to define things by how many steps I have to look ahead, and I'm not sure how many steps that one was. I'll try to resolve that one by the end of this week.
#16: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Mar 31, 2010
I believe this can be solved without onerous look-ahead. Please look at http://infrapinklizzard.deviantart.com/art/Logic-8169-159024800 for my process.

Found to be logically solvable by Gator.
#18: Gator (Gator) on Mar 31, 2010 [HINT]
I'm going to go ahead and mark this one solvable by logic. It does go beyond what we normally consider solvable, but we also have it clearly defined on how it is solvable. The look-aheads are not too taxing in this case.

Jan has proposed a possible new tagging system, and this puzzle would definitely fall in the "unique solution, much lookahead required" category.

tough and I'm still not sure how logical it was I had to use your helps.
cute though!

Some lookahead needed, but not more than most other puzzles it seems to me.

Adorable. Had to guess once. The mouth threw me off a bit. Very fun to solve.
