Puzzle Description:

The Nine Point Circle of a Triangle, associated with mathematician Euler, sometimes called Euler's Circle.

Euler would be very disturbed by this image, as would any good mathematician, because it is not quite accurate.

I just wanted to make a quick and easy B/W math puzzle for you. Not good enough to enter in the contest, but good enough to publish, I hope.

There are nine points on a triangle that when connected form a circle. This Nine Point Circle was discovered by Leonhard Euler. An accurate example is here:

As a math specialist for highly gifted students, I give you an A+ for this puzzle. My kids just finished a unit on Euler's line. Lots of fun!!!!

ahh good old Euler, crazy how much that guy accomplished.. and blind too! What a nerdy PBN week, but fun nonetheless.

Nice to learn something new. Good puzzle. Good image.

Thanks, Wendy. I like getting good grades. :-)

Ant, I just learned while reading up on the Internet that he lost his sight, and became even more productive. He has a photographic memory. I can't remember anything anymore. I lost my cell phone yesterday, forgot to pick it back up when I set it down at the store. I miss my land line, I always knew where it was. :-)

Thanks, BlackCat.

Haha I'm with you there.. I actually left my cell phone sitting at home this morning and I've been lost all day at work. Must've grabbed my empty pocket for it a dozen times already today. I didn't realize how dependant I'd become on it until I finally spent a few hours without it heh.

been there, done that too. nice puzzle.

Thanks, Telly.

Fun one. Yes, Teresa, the circle should definitely be completely inside the triangle by definition.

In Re: #5, Does that mean you photographic memory just ran out of film? :-)
#11: ant (agrest272) on Dec 2, 2009 [SPOILER]
hmm I think the circle will only be completely in the triangle if the triangle is equilateral, no?
#12: Teresa K (fasstar) on Dec 2, 2009 [SPOILER]
Ant, I believe you are correct.

Adam, my circle is a little too big, but I was not going for accuracy as much as for a nice, solvable puzzle image. Here is what it whould look like:small,

And here is a java program where you can change the sides of the triangle, and see how an obtuse triangle like mine would have a circle that extends quite a bit outside of the triangle:

That's the same link I was going to post. Ant is correct.

I guess this is what happens when you make too many puzzles....

I thoroughly enjoyed the links Teresa...and the puzzle too.

Thanks, Gator.
