My daughter Karie is hungry ALL the time, because she has Prader-Willi Syndrome, and her hypothalamus is stuck in starvation mode.#2: Sallie Wilbur (sarriemom) on Nov 23, 2009 [SPOILER]
Not only is she always hungry, but her metabolism is 60% of normal, so she can only eat about half as many calories as everyone else.
So the food must be locked up at all times, and calories have to be counted carefully, with a special nutrition plan to make sure she gets enough nutrients every day.

I like how you did the close-up on the utensils! PWS sounds like a very difficult condition with a number of challenging dynamics. Karie is blessed to have you to help keep her healthy, and I bet you're pretty blessed to have her too!#3: Teresa K (fasstar) on Nov 23, 2009 [SPOILER]
Thanks, Sallie. You are right, I am blessed in different ways with each of my kids. Karie has taught me a lot about acceptance.#4: Ray Star (RazorStar) on Nov 23, 2009
Thanksgiving is a particular challenge. She usually only gets 350 calories for dinner, but she is saving some calories from lunch and I am making special dishes that look just like the more fattening dishes that are on other people's tables. In fact, I can make an entire Thanksgiving dinner for only 505 calories (usually around 1,500 calories for one helping each of the regular food).
For anyone who has to watch their fat intake or for those on Weight Watchers, here are my delicious low- cal recipes:

Gees, now I feel bad about having a really high metabolism. That has gotta be tough to handle.#5: Teresa K (fasstar) on Nov 23, 2009
You are so lucky, Ray. Karie's brother John is just the opposite of Karie. He has high metabolism, and was so skinny when he was young, no matter now much he ate. When they were kids, I had to try to fatten up John while keeping Karie's calories down. They would laugh about it, and John would say, "I wish I could give Karie some of my energy and she could give me some of her fat."#6: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Nov 29, 2009
