This works very well for a small puzzle. I found it quite interesting to solve, and liked the final image. Very cool.

Yay!
#6: Gypso (Gypso) on Nov 12, 2007
Bionerd! Any chance you're heading out to California to help determine damages to our sealife following the oil spill? Let me know if you need someone to "cover you" if the locals get restless. ^>^
#7: Bionerd (nieboo) on Nov 13, 2007
Wow, I didn't even know there was an oil spill. BAD oceanographer!
#8: Gypso (Gypso) on Nov 13, 2007
Surely you must know about the one in Russia, Bionerd?
They just closed all our beaches in town today. We didn't make the news, rarely do. They only talk about the beaches north of the gate.I am worried for our birds, sea lions and porpoise. Even a little bit for the surfers who don't seem to have the good sense to stay on land. I'm not sure if that's dedication or addiction...
We have commercial crab fisherman in town who are feeling the pinch.
BTW, You are a GOOD oceanographer!

feel bad for the fishies too!
Fish get no respect.
#10: Gypso (Gypso) on Nov 14, 2007
Sorry, sorry, sorry Bionerd! Of course the fish too. I heard on the news last night how the oil on the surface may cast shadows obscuring the sunlight needed by plant life underwater, thus destroying habitat for the fish to lay the eggs of next season's generation. It's so sad. I'm glad that you're looking after their welfare. ^>^

The oil also doesn't stay on the surface for ever. Wave action breaks it up into beads that mix into the water column. As it weathers, tars form that sink to the bottom. The fishies are definitely at risk.
#12: Gypso (Gypso) on Nov 14, 2007
You're right Jan. The oil has already found its way to oyster beds just north of SF bay.
I think that the attention given the other sea life comes from their immediate exposure and distress. Many birds have died already and when you see a sea lion poke its whiskered face out of the oily water it's very upsetting.
I understand that there is also great concern for the migrating (?) salmon.
#13: Bionerd (nieboo) on Nov 14, 2007
I think the attention is given to the other sea life because they are charasmatic megafauna. Damn charasmatic megafauna.
#14: Robert Kummerfeldt (rmkummerfeldt) on Nov 14, 2007
I think 'charasmatic megafauna' is a technical term for cute.
#15: Bionerd (nieboo) on Nov 14, 2007
yeah it's because seals, sea lions, dolphins, whales, bird, etc, are all big and cute so they get all the attention.
#16: Gypso (Gypso) on Nov 14, 2007
Lol, you two. :D

i really enjoyed solving this one. I like the way the symbol revealed itself slowly. as for the discussion of the origin of the symbol. I was taught that it was the foot of the dove, another sign of peace. I do like the upraised arms image also. it makes sense that one rebel can make a world of difference.

Really enjoyed this one, especially how you have to move around & around through the whole puzzle to reach the conclusion. I like the title, as well :-)

Groovy puzzle, but Peace is not the absence of struggle, it is a method of struggle.
