He looks kind of like a teddy bear to me...

Found to be logically solvable by jan.
#3: Jan Wolter (jan) on Jun 21, 2009 [HINT] [SPOILER]
All is solvable by regular line logic except the smile (which is solvable by smile logic) and a bit of the ears/forehead area. You can use summing logic to exactly place the black 6 in row two, and then the rest solves easily.
#4: BlackCat (BlackCat) on Jun 22, 2009 [SPOILER]
Fun little puzzle even if the grass is boring. Is it a racoon? Cute little character anyway.
#5: Kylie :) (misty) on Apr 5, 2010 [SPOILER]
Agreed it looks more like a teddy bear to me, except for the tail. Either way it's cute :)

I solved everything up to the ears - please explain how summing logic works there. I read the advanced solving page on summing and understand it in your example, but don't see how to apply it here (I need the same 12 blacks in the 4 rows and 8 columns that I have blank). Right now my only white spaces are: R1 C6,7,14,15 ; R2 C5,6,7,8,13,14,15,16 ; R3 C5,6,7,8,13,14,15,16 ; R4 C6,7,14,15

Focus on the left ear. We are not necessarily looking for exactly where the cells have to be places, but in what section they have to be. Look at columns 5-7. I have a total of 5 cells that need to be filled in. Rows 1 4 will give you 2 of the 5. So we need 3 more from rows 2 and 3. We obviously get 1 from row 2 as the 1 clue has to be in rows 5-7. We also get 1 from row 3. So we have accounted for 4 of the 5.

Now if you where to fill in R3C8, this would not let you get another cell to fill in on row 2 as R2C8 would have to be a dot. So R3C8 will have to be a dot. Once this is figured out, the rest solves normally.
