Puzzle Description:

Movie Projector. Flicker fusion threshhold is the frequency at which an intermittent light stimulus appears to be completely steady to the observer. The rate at which the average human eye can no longer detect flashes between motion picture frames is 16 per second. The rate of 24 frames per second became the de facto standard for sound motion pictures in the mid-1920s. HDTV uses a 50 or 60 frame rate.

This flicker fusion threshhold varies depending on factors such as the focal point of the perceived motion (center or peripheral), the modulation of brightness, and the alterness of the observer. If you would like to learn more about this, I thought it was best described on wiki:

If you want to get into the more technical arguments around the theory (myth) of "persistance of vision" there is a good article here:

Another great one from you. Very original and well done.

Thanks. When I saw a similar image while searching for something else, I thought it would be a good subject for a puzzle. It's a bit easy, gut the complexity of the theory makes up for the simplicity of the puzzle. :-)

Teresa, I agree. The subject matter is fascinating. Great idea for a puzzle. I learn so much here about so many things. Thanks!

Neat!

Thanks, Doreen and Blackcat. Sometimes when I look for a little tidbit to go with a puzzle, I find way more than I am looking for.

very cool! the only thing i can't take is a strobe light or anything lower than 16 frames per second at a steady rate. the movie "pitch black" begins with a very bright flickering light. i like the movie but i've never been able to watch the first ten minutes of it. i also left a dance club once when the strobe lights were put on. i simply cannot stand it. but i really liked this puzzle!
