Puzzle Description:

my head before history exam

#1: Meg Tayler (rebelcat) on Apr 24, 2009 [SPOILER]

Hmm... 1939 was the first appearance of Batman in a comic book. In 1701 Jethro Tull (not the musician) invented a seed drill. And in 1541 Gerardus Mercator built a globe. Three years later he was charged with heresy and imprisoned.

I love history!

Kind of a mysterious set of dates. 1939 is the start of world war II, and I guess a fairly momentous year. But 1541? Various spaniards are out exploring the Americas, discovering the Mississippi River and stuff. Henry the eighth sends his fifth wife off to prison and declares himself king of Scotland. Pretty much business as usual. 1701 is only a little better. War of Spanish Succession. Reigns of Fredrick I of Prussia, and James III of England start. Yale founded. Captain Kidd hung for piracy. I'm trying to image what kind of history test you need to know these three dates for, and I'm not succeeding.
