Actually, you CAN make a perfect circle out of squares. Try again, and you will see it can be done.

That's funny, I didn't even notice the typo; it's such a familiar quote that I just skimmed past it.

Actually, some of Columbus's ship were pretty small, though not quite this small. The Nina was probably only about 50 feet, crowded with a crew of 24. But it's original lateen sails had been replaced by square sails, and it probably had three or four masts. Maybe this is the boat Columbus practiced in when he was 12.
