Back in 1987 I wrote a program that converted text into cursive banners, like this: 
   ___                _     __  _
  (   )              ' )   /   // _/_
   __/___.  ____      / / / __|/  /  _  __
  / / (_/|_/ / (_    (_(_/ (_) \_(__(/_/ (_
 (_/
There was a brief fad of cursive signatures on USENET after I posted that program, but it faded away after a few years.

Anyway, this puzzle is sort of an homage to cursive.c.

Well, it started out as an entirely different puzzle, but I decided it wasn't going anywhere, so I blanked it and resized it and drew a new image, which was completely unsolvable, so I abandoned it for a while again, and then ran across it again and beat at it some more to make it finally solve. So here it is, a new puzzle with an old number.
