Puzzle Description:

Birds perched on the telephone line high above the houses. If the weather is calm and warm, they will perch every which way. If it is windy and chilly, they will all face the same direction - into the wind, for retention of body warmth and for easy take-off into the wind.

Very well done. The story is clear without the explanation. While a bit predictable in spots, I found it a very challenging puzzle because of all the detail.

Nice picture. Why do they face "into" the wind when it's cold? That's the last thing I would do. :-) Why not face "away" from the wind? Wouldn't it be warmer that way?

Thanks, Adam. I wondered the same thing. I found out that if they perch facing away from the wind, the wind comes from behind and ruffles their feathers and they lose body warmth. If there is wind, they always fly into the wind, and facing that direction makes it easier for them to take off. So there you have it.

Lovely little houses. Here in the New Orleans area, as you drive alongside one of the many canals, there are water pipes running across and over the canals. On cold days, the pipes will be covered in birds, there to warm their feet on the heated pipes. :)
