I believe that they were used for almost any ailment as many were back then. It had quite a bit of mercury in it so I would imagine that it harmed more than it helped. Since mercury doesn't degrade, they ( ?? ) were able to pinpoint at least one of L & C camps by buried burnt embers and mercury in the ground.
