Great Picture! I'm impressed!

Very, very nice puzzle. I bet the 26 in the leftmost column was done deliberately to make the puzzle solve. It doesn't entirely make artistic sense, though it's not disturbing either, and I think the puzzle would go nowhere without it. These compromises between playability and appearance always interest me. This was a good one.

Yes, I spent THE most time playing around with that leftmost column. Without it there would be no good entry into the puzzle and people would have to do some guessing.
#4: Tara Pibel (tarap56) on Jun 26, 2006
Fabulous puzzle!
#5: Jan Wolter (jan) on Jun 26, 2006
I also think it was very clever to put the leftmost column on the right.

I wish I had a copy editor for everything I write.

A beautiful image, and a good challenge.
#7: Bobbie Hall (koalaobo) on Jun 27, 2006
Oops, I didn't catch it either. My husband accuses me of being directionally challenged. Luckily one doesn't have to know left from right to be able to draw--just to be able to communicate. Then again, I knew exactly which column you were referring to.
#8: Mark Conger (aruba) on Jun 29, 2006
Very nice picture!
#9: Gitte Olesen (granny40) on Jan 14, 2007
Great pic :-)
#10: Naomi Millar (sailormewtwo) on Feb 19, 2007
Nice picture. Tough puzzle too, phew
#11: Rachel R (rachel) on Jul 25, 2007
I loved how challenging this one was.
#12: Arduinna (arduinna) on May 23, 2008
If you hold your hands in front of you, palms down, thumb out, the hand that makes an "L" is on the left! I actually have to do this sometimes, at least mentally! I've never found a good, quick way to tell East from West though, and I am VERY directionally challenged.

Great puzzle. Not quite too big and just enough challenge to keep it interesting.
#13: Rea Aksglæde Karlsen (Rea) on Jul 18, 2008
good tip arduinna. but in Denmark its højre(right) og venstre (left). I gues if you turn your hand a little it could make a V...
#14: Jan Wolter (jan) on Jul 19, 2008
Yeah but turning either hand a little bit could make a "V".

Some of these things translate, some don't.

In German, if you are trying to decide if the moon is zunehmend (waxing) or abnehmend (waning) the rule used to be to visualize the script capital letters Z and A. The curved side of the letter is on the same side as the curved side of the moon. This doesn't translate to English at all. Partly because "waxing" and "waning" start with the same letter, partly because in modern english script a capital Z doesn't have a curved side, and partly because if you happen to be an Austrialian speaker of English, the rule is backwards anyway because it's assumes you are in the northern hemisphere.

On the other hand if you are trying to figure out the where ost (east) and west (west) are in Germany, then you face north and visualize the word "wo" ("where"). The "w" is "west" and "o" is "ost". This translates perfectly to english, where the "w" of "where" is on the west side, and the "e" is on the "east", but I've never heard it used in the US.

One of my favorites. Read the comments and kept looking for the 26 on the left. So glad someone found it :)
#21: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Jul 15, 2009
This was amazing. I loved it. Excellent puzzle to look at and solve.
#22: Byrdie (byrdie) on Dec 23, 2009
Yipes is right! However the outcome is a wonderful image and worth the effort.
#23: Vaggelis Kamaris (evag7651) on Aug 18, 2010
Nice picture
#24: Laurel Orendorff (laurel.1) on Aug 18, 2010
This is one of the best puzzles on the site. Fantastic.

I am told the best way to learn your left from your right is to take a class in boxing.
#25: Synthia McBride (synthia) on May 27, 2011
Amazing image.
#26: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jul 22, 2011
This is the perfect puzzle. It's B&W, not too huge, fun and challenging to solve without being frustrating, with a nice Aha experience, an image that is artistic and recognizable, and a clever title. The comments are fun too, but that was just a bonus. :-)
#27: RB (rb2013) on Jul 13, 2019
It feels so real like a photograph! Wonderful picture!
#28: Bill Eisenmann (Bullet) on Mar 11, 2020
Incredible rendering! A tough solve, but I didn't care, because it was beautiful (and easy to spot what it was going to be) early on. I worked it generally top to bottom.

I want to do it again!
#29: jewel crown (jewel) on Jul 12, 2020
Absolutely beautiful! One of my favourites to solve.
#30: Michael Eddy (meddy) on Dec 19, 2022
Enjoyed it. Nice one!
