Why wouldn't he take it with him like most wizard's do?

Ah, but if a wizard is vaporized, his hat is always left behind (usually smoking). It's one of those narrative imperative thingys.

But disappearing doesn't imply he was vaporized. He could have just disapparated.

But, you see, my dear Watson, the fact that his hat was left behind suggests vaporization, because no wizard would ever leave his hat behind voluntarily. A wizard just isn't a wizard without his hat, after all. He's just some guy in a dress.

Therefore, obviously: FOUL PLAY.

The police are continuing with their inquiries.

The muggle police are powerless against someone who was able to vaporize a wizard! But of course... you are implying WIZARD police, aren't you...

The wizard police have a history of corruption and being afraid of the bad guys. You want the Order of the Phoenix!

I think we need to call in Sam Vimes from Discworld. He and Captian Carrot will fix it!

I figured it was a wicked witch's hat, after she was melted when some careless girl threw a bucket of water on her.
