According to the European Commision: "Inspiration for the € symbol itself came from the Greek epsilon (Є) – a reference to the cradle of European civilisation – and the first letter of the word Europe, crossed by two parallel lines to ‘certify’ the stability of the euro."

I love the bit about certifying the stability of the currency by putting two lines through the symbol. It's typological magic. And it might even work.

I had never seen the Euro symbol before.... or even thought about it for that matter, since living here in the good ol' U.S. of A, I don't have to deal with Euros.
