Nice smile logic left to solve the little hook part.

Adam, could you explain the smile logic? I couldn't complete the puzzle without guessing (since I expected a specific shape).

Thanks

Sure, Ga, I could do that. But Jan has already nicely done it in Forum Topic #99, entitled "Advanced Puzzle Solving Techniques." If you still have any questions after reading that, I would be more than willing to try and explain it further.

There's a link to the advanced puzzle solving techniques page at the top of the FAQ page.

Thanks, Adam and Jan, but even after going through the examples of smile logic, I still cannot complete this puzzle. I see two possible permutations rather than just one answer. In this case I know the shape, but that isn't using logic :) I suspect there is something that I am missing, but I cannot see it.
Other suggestions? Is there some way I can show you what I have? And then ask questions? I would really like to improve.

At the end, I was left with 2 separate 2x2 squares in the 12th/13th columns, rows 4/5, and 7/8. I hope that is what you ended up with, too (you should have the middle of your "3" in the 13th column). The rows only have 1's left.

If you look at the top 2x2 square (but you will do the same for the bottom one, too), you know that you need a 1 in each of the rows 4 and 5 (and then in 7/8). So you know that they will be diagonally from each other, in some order, right?

If you put the "1" from row 4 in the 13th column, by default the other "1" will go diagonally down from it, causing a space between the blacks that form your 3.

Similarly, if you place the "1" from the 8th row in the 13th column, the same result will occur, messing up your "3."

I don't know if I have done it enough to just "see" it, but even when sometimes I don't know what the image is supposed to be, I can recognize a "smile logic" situation.

Thanks for all your efforts, Adam. Even after going over your comments, I can still place the 1 in column 3 in more than one place. I can then force both of the number 1s in column 12 into different positions. I even went back and checked my placement of the colored squares to be sure I'd not made a simple oops earlier.

I don't see how. Sorry it didn't work for you, but smile logic works for most everyone else.

Ga, I just re-did the puzzle several times to see if there was any other possible solution, but couldn't find one (I almost thought there was one til I realized the 13 in the middle wouldn't allow me to do it) don't know if this helps you at all
