2 sixteenth notes?#5: Katydid (kmeifert) on Nov 10, 2008
That's definitely two sixteenth notes, and by their diamond shape, and the stem coming up from the middle instead of the side, they look to be from the dawn of printed music, about 500 years ago! That's my opinion as a musicologist, anyway.#6: Annabella Behrens (Annabella) on Nov 10, 2008
Eighth notes have one beam across the top, sixteenth notes have two beams.

This puzzle has been edited so there are only two bars across the top instead of three (just some clarification for people who are trying to figure out the discussion above).#11: Byrdie (byrdie) on Sep 27, 2010 [SPOILER]
Two sixteenth notes and could be from early publication but could also be from a percussion score.
