I hated the no tag-back rule! I was always a bit chunky as a kid and did not run fast, but had quick reflexes and could tag back like nobody's business!

In Ohio, we always said "oxen free". Like most kids' games, we never gave any thought to what the words meant; and the context was just as Norma described - everyone was granted immunity! Thank you, Kristen, for the "alle alle auch sind frie," explanation - that makes perfect sense!
