Also, never has a mechanical device been so indestructible.#8: Joanne Firla (JoFirla) on Jan 29, 2025
I completely agree. Those things worked no matter what happened.#9: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Feb 3, 2025
Jota - When I was a kid, they were all black, here in the US, too. I remember when my mom painted one gold, and then, soon after that, other colors started appearing in stores.#10: gregg licht (Lgreg) on Feb 9, 2025
Bill, I used that telegraph trick once when my wife and I were trapped in a stuck elevator between floors (this was the pre-cell phone era). The elevator phone for emergencies could only call the apartment office, which was closed at the time. After some experimenting, I pushed the call button and before the phone could call the office, I was able to quickly tap the hang-up button 4X then 1X then 1X again and was able to reach 411 and the operator sent help.#11: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Feb 11, 2025
Interesting! 411 would be the online telephone directory information number, so it's not who I'd normally think to call for a rescue, but it's also probably the shortest possible number -- or maybe the *only* possible number -- that you could have called in the brief amount of time before the phone auto-dialed the office. Greg, that is amazingly thoughtful and cool!!!#12: Alan Lafond (Cural) on Jun 19, 2025 [SPOILER]
