I can really only make puzzles when I have time for them. I work in IT Asset Disposition (with my specialty being secure data destruction), and it's been a bear lately as I've had to spend this week processing more than 100 iPhones and iPads (that all belonged to one company) and recording them in a spreadsheet, which tends to turn my brain to spaghetti at the end of the day.

Yonah, I think it's neat to make puzzles of anybody's name, even if they participate regularly. This one is amazing!!

@Kitty, how did you "process" the iPhones and iPads? Did you just securely erase the data, or physically destroy the devices?

Oh, how I hope that a there's mention of a hammer somewhere in Kitty's answer! :D

#5: In summary, all data on a device is securely erased using special software if it can be reused, and then it is sent to our surplus department to be tested and listed on eBay. #38894 depicts an obstacle I regularly encounter during the process.

Sadly, I don't get to smash devices with a hammer. The fact that they have batteries means they could go boom, which is a Very Bad Thing in a warehouse full of laptops, UPSes, and other things that contain batteries. All that happens with devices we can't reuse is that they go to a recycler downstream that will physically destroy the flash storage.

It is also my job to remove all traces of data from hard drives. To cut a long story short, I wipe them with software that can also associate the drive's serial number with whatever lot it belongs to.

If a hard drive doesn't meet our standards or it fails the wiping process, it gets physically destroyed, which means I feed it to a shredder.

#8 Cool! I'd like to watch a hard drive being shredded.
