The description is a riff on what will be a trilogy by Jasper Fforde.

In addition to several other incredible series of books, Shades of Grey was about a society ranked by one's ability to see color, and to what level of concentration. I am just into its sequel Red Side Story.

Also check out the Literatec series starring Thursday Next, who literally can get lost in a book. There are some for younger audiences in the Nursery Crime series as well.
