We were on a river cruise in The Netherlands. One night I was awakened by a loud crash and found myself on the floor. I peeked out the cabin door and several passengers were standing there, wondering what had happened. Eventually a steward walked down the corridor and said we'd crashed into a barge. After a while, they announced that we weren't in danger of sinking and would stay on the boat that night, but there were no services. The kitchen and bar were destroyed. In the morning, we saw broken dishes and glasses all over the place, and were able to see the damage to the boat's bow when we got ashore. They took us by bus to a luxury hotel in Amsterdam for the rest of the scheduled cruise, refunded half the cruise cost, and gave us half-off coupons for another cruise. So, the horrible part didn't last that long. Must say, Viking did take care of us (and gave us a story to tell).

I think I'd enjoy spending the time in Amsterdam more than the cruise, but that's just me.

Great story! I think I'm pretty much the only person I know who hasn't been on a cruise ship. What's the consensus, people? Should I go?
