Yep ... light comes on.

Pull over.

Release hood lever.

Get out, open hood.

Yeah, engine's still there.

But the light is still on?!!?

Sooo, that lit engine-with-lightning-bolt icon doesn't mean that the engine is fully charged?

Anyone else ever have a vehicle that you had to cover the check engine light with tape because it was on for no reason, and it was too bright when driving at night? In my case it was something with the light itself. And why can't it give more detail so we know whether it's a case of "slow down and bail before it explodes" or "get to a mechanic in the next week or so"?

Spot, generally warning lights are yellow, red, or blinking. If it's yellow, it is alerting you to a problem that you should address, but the car is still safely driveable. A red light means it's serious and should be addressed as soon as possible, such as low oil. Blinking red means pull over and shut it down immediately (before it does it for you!)

And 99% of the time, the "Check Engine" light (yellow) means something is wrong with the emissions system, usually the EGR valve. (Exhaust Gas Recycler)

In America, anyway. I don't know if other countries or markets conform to this.

I got my check engine light to turn on by not tightening my gas cap enough. It has to click. No one told me this. (Read the manual? Are you kidding?)

Oh, were we supposed to READ that thing? I thought it was just so the glove box would have something in it. Or perhaps, in my case, used as a cushion for something fragile in there.
