Puzzle Description:

It is Halloween night. Time to name the worst candy ever.

#1: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Oct 31, 2023

I'll start. Zagnut. It is peanut flavored cardboard.
#2: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Oct 31, 2023
Followed closely by candy corn. Sweetened wax. Is it even digestible or does it pass right through like regular corn?
#3: Belita (belita) on Oct 31, 2023
The peanut-shaped candy. I think they're called circus peanuts. Also dum-dum suckers. Not that they're so bad, it's just that people who give them out are just cheap-skates. And then there are those taffy-ish things wrapped in orange and black wrappers that are usually so stale you can't chew them.

Lol...I love circus peanuts! When we were little, our church had a party and Santa gave out bags of hard candy and peanuts in the shell. One particular hard candy tasted like soap...that's probably the only candy that cannot be redeemed, to my mind, anyway.
#5: Yonah Kondor (yokon965) on Oct 31, 2023 [SPOILER]
I never understood the candy corn hate. I'll gladly trade you all my tootsie rolls for all your candy corn.
#6: Bill Eisenmann (Bullet) on Oct 31, 2023
Those awful sugarwater-filled mini wax bottles.

What do I win??
#7: Juli Simmons (jonis) on Oct 31, 2023
Well most of my least faves have been named already, so I'm gonna go with Mounds.
#8: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Oct 31, 2023
Oh, I forgot about Necco wafers, Flavored chalk.

Juli, more cardboard only coated in chocolate.
#9: Jota (jota) on Oct 31, 2023
Licorice

I'd like to speak up in defense of Dum-Dums. They aren't very exciting, but they are probably the most allergy-safe candy out there, so for kids with allergies it may be the only thing they can have.
#11: Scott (McEncheese) on Oct 31, 2023
Here in Canada, it's gotta be Thrills gum. It literally tastes like soap.
#12: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Oct 31, 2023
Any of the cheap imitations. Like imitation Reeses or M&M's. UGH!
#13: Carol Brand (KarylAnn) on Oct 31, 2023
Dots.
#14: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Oct 31, 2023
If you are going to eat Dum Dums, you need to counteract it with some Smarties.

Have to agree with the wax bottles and Dots, but I've always liked Zagnut and even searched for stores that sold it as an adult.
#16: David R. Felton (drfelton) on Nov 1, 2023
To each his/her own, I suppose. For me, I never liked the taste of chocolate & nuts together, especially chocolate & peanut butter. So even though I know it's one of the most popular candies on the planet, I won't go near Reece's Peanut Butter Cups. When I was a kid, I would trade any I had received for *any* other candy my siblings had.

I agree with Dots and the bottles, don't know what zagnut is. Love black licorice and Red Vines brand of red, tootsie rolls and Necco wafers (specifically the licorice!). You can keep the candy corn, the circus peanuts, the Easter marshmallow birdies, but the absolute worst is anything flavored chocolate that isn't ACTUALLY chocolate (except the aforementioned tootsie rolls).

Someone in my local area started a Facebook thread of "What is the weirdest candy your kids got in their treat bag?", and some of the answers are amazing!

Some highlights:

1) Evidently there is a thing where people hand out potatoes. A lot of kids will choose the potato over candy!

2) An onion.

3) Socks.

4) Celery.

5) Ramen noodles.

6) A lime. Organic.

7) Zombie doll head.

8) A witch finger.

9) Green beans.

10) A build your own bird house.

11) An application for Speaker of the House.

There's more -- the whole thread is here:

Here's the article about people giving out potatoes:

Those horrible peanut-flavored taffy things, that are wrapped in orange or black paper.

I knew someone who said her neighborhood had a custom of "Trick or Drinking". After the kids were in bed they would go door to door with a shot glass. It sounded fun!

I see I'm not the only one who despises the beige lumps in the orange or black wrappers. I've heard tell that they're peanut butter taffy, someone must have waved a closed jar of Jif over the vat. I've tried to find them to show to someone what I was talking about, but I've never seen them in any stores.

My second is black licorice. BLEAH! I don't like any anise-flavored anything.

I know I've had circus peanuts, but not this century. I can't remember what they taste like.

Pspaughtamus, did you not follow my link in comment #20? It tells you the name and manufacturer of those terrible things! ^_^

Anything with coconut, Mounds and Almond Joys.
