My previous house had a shallow slope portion. I had a pull shovel - it looked like a small curved shovel but the curved pocket was pointing toward the handle rather than away from it. The handle was very long. So, I could lift the shovel up in the air up to the top of the roof and then pull the snow back down towards myself to drag the snow off the roof without having to climb up onto it.

We call them roof rakes around here. I had one. We modified the handle so it had a longer reach, but it still wasn't effective with 2 to 3 feet of snow on the roof.

I don't think I would have survived living where there is a lot of snow. Even though Arizona has often posted both the warmest and the coldest temperature for the same day I have always lived where all we have to shovel is sunshine.

Imagine the fate of the residents of Tahoe this year ... I have a friend out there in Bishop, who has gotten over 50 Feet of snow this year! Great for skiing and Boarding, but terrifying for daily living!

I can't even imagine.

Here comes the old guy saying: "I remember back in '03," ... Unfortunately, I do remember back in '03. We had a late March storm that delivered 5 feet of snow to the Denver area. Early on in the storm, I barely got my SUV into the driveway from work before it high-centered and I had to dig it out to get it into the garage. We put together a team: one neighbor had a very large snow-blower, and two of the others used shovels to dig out the driveways in the neighborhood. It took about 3 days to get it all dug out.

Yeah, Joanne, we called it a roof rake, too. When there is a large amount of snow, you just do the front few feet (or the front meter here :-), then the next few feet, etc. until you get to the back of the pile. Of course, you don't worry about getting a clean sweep until you are working from the back to the front again since earlier you will be pulling more snow over top of the area you just cleared.

I've seen the same kind of "I can see you over the snowbank" visual aid used in Maine. It's the only way to see if other vehicles are coming into your path in some areas.

Years ago when my sister lived in Billings, Montana, before turn signals, when they wanted to signal a turn they would briefly open and close their door.
