I heard that word a lot growing up outside of Philly, but I never knew how it was spelled. There was an ad for Levi's dress pants (I think it was Levi's) that had the line about them having "a skosh more room." I always thought it was Yiddish, or maybe from the Dutch, but I just Googled, and Miriam-Webster says: The word skosh comes from the Japanese word sukoshi, which is pronounced "skoh shee" and means "a tiny bit" or "a small amount." The Japanese word was shortened by U.S. servicemen stationed in Japan after World War II. Later, in the Korean War, a small soldier was often nicknamed Skosh.
