Yes, the Game of Life was an interesting simulation of imaginary growth and decay of the pixilated cells on the screen. The interesting part was to either randomly or intentionally create a starting pattern of light pixels, let the 'game' start running, and watch as the initial 'communities' shrink, grow, die out completely, or expand continuously; and try to guess ahead of time which of these results were most likely.

The 'cute' thing about the Gosper gun was that the 'cells' spring to life and die in a coordinated fashion, resulting in an 'organism' moving across the screen, seemingly unchanged.

It's a geek topic to be sure, but one that some of us found fascinating because (a) computers and especially computer displays were pretty rudimentary at the time, and (b) this whole little world was created with only a handful of very simple rules.
