This puzzle is huge. Unfortunately, it is also pretty much completely unsolvable. This isn't apparant until you have solved 80% of the puzzle, at which point you get hopelessly stuck. Given that that is after the investment of several hours of work, that's kind of a bummer.

I'm inclined to unpublish this puzzle, unless changes can be made.

I took the liberty of peeking at the solution. It's a very nice image, but getting it to solvability isn't going to be terribly easy.

OK, by dint of hours of effort, I've concluded that it is possible to get a bit further than I did before - you can get most of both eyes and part of the mouth if you do lots and lots of trial and error, but the puzzle just isn't completely solvable and there is more than one solution. I'm going to unpublish it.

Obviously it is the product of a lot of effort, and it is a very pretty picture, and it could probably be fixed up to work right. If the author would like to edit it up a bit more and republish it, that would be terrific.

thanks for the input..I'll try working on it.

I've actually unpublished this puzzle. You can still see it because you have a partial solution. I'm impressed that you solved it. It's a nice image, and I'm hoping the author will put a bit more work into fixing it up.

A nice image, but to reiterate what others have said, VERY frustrating due to the huge size (which forces a lot of scrolling and causes the program to act sluggish) and amount of guessing needed.
#8: Jan Wolter (jan) on Jul 31, 2006
I hadn't realized that this had been modified and republished. My software only noftifies me of that if I had previously solved the puzzle, and I never did find a solution for the previous version of this.

Unfortunately, it's not clear that the new version is any more solvable.
#9: Jan Wolter (jan) on Jul 31, 2006
It's still got multiple solutions, and still requires massive guessing to solve. I'm going to unpublish again.
#10: nancy king (naneki) on Sep 21, 2007
OK lets try this again!

Stunning! What a magnificent image! I don't see the ears that Jan wrote about so I'm guessing that they were part of an earlier version.

It is immense and requires a lot of scroll work which wasn't a problem for my screen but I understand how difficult that would be for a smaller screen.

I think this puzzle would be an excellent one to print and solve on paper. It's a solid challenge and the end result is lovely.

Thank you Naneki for all the hard work. I can see by the comment dates that you've been working on this for some time. I'm so glad that you persevered.

Congratulations on what was originally your first puzzle posted to this site! The final version is gorgeous as obviously your subject must be.

Thanks for the brain pilates! This was a fun, fun puzzle!^V^

I'm a little bummed that it wasn't Walter Payton, which I thought might be the case in looking at the title.
#14: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 25, 2007
Yup, I agree. The third version of this puzzle is solvable, though still difficult. Cool.

Thank you, it was one of my first puzzles. I hope I have improved since then

I have been waiting for another puzzle from you-I usually look at newer puzzles on the first screen and pick. and I got the great idea to look for old puzzles from my favorite puzzle makers. I feel like I found a treasure! I did make a logical guess in 2 spots. I am totally impressed that this was your first! And assuming you don't have to redo them now, you have definitely improved. I really enjoy all your puzzles.

very good picture, but too huge - I longed all the time for a button which would make an enclosed area black (or white), so I wouldn't have to fill it manually
#28: Arduinna (arduinna) on Aug 19, 2008
Zuzana, the h and v buttons will fill in whole lines with one color (the color that's on each end of the line.) I didn't explain that well. Try it!
#29: Zuzana (Mori.1) on Aug 19, 2008
Wow, that is great! Thanks!

We have come long ways ... Reading the comments it's like reading ancient history ... I loved this puzzle, I'm glad I got the good version.
Thanks Naneki.

I liked this puzzle a lot. But I had problems that every time I saved the puzzle to come back to it later, the bottom ~12 rows were all blank, even though I had filled them in. I haven't seen that bug on any other puzzles, even ones that were large. Did anyone else have that problem?

I ended up making logical guesses. I think I only did this because of the immense size, but using edge logic my guessing suggested it might work. Fortunately my attempts led to solvability! I think I did this both with the 8 in question and a 5 a little lower due to slight loss of patience in scrolling around.

DOES THIS PUZZLE REQUIRE GUESSING??? IF SO, IT SHOULD BE IDENTIFIED AS SOMETHING OTHER THAN UNIQUE WITH NO GUESSING REQUIRED!!!

I thought it was a fairly easy to solve puzzle - a bit intimidating due to the size. Had to take a couple of educated guesses toward the end but, all-in-all, a nice solve.
#41: Vaggelis Kamaris (evag7651) on Oct 16, 2020
nice and solvable with pure logic.
