Oh gosh, the library I'm at has a copy. I already have 4 books checked out!!

Whew! I don't see it on the shelves, so I'm safe for now. ^_^

Our library has been "order requests online and pick them up at the front door" for ages. I'm a longtime heavy library user, but I haven't seen the shelves in over a year. Sigh. Someday!!!

Ooh, bummer. We've been open to the public since last September. Everyone has to wear a mask and get a temperature check at the door, but otherwise they're free to browse.

In my school library the kids put the books on hold in the computer and I pull them and deliver them to their classrooms. The upside is that now they all know how to use the online catalog so next year they won't be constantly asking me if we have some book. They'll still be asking me to find it for them though.

Our public library has a Summer Game where people earn points by finding specific things in the online catalog and solving various other types of puzzles. I think one side effect is that it spreads some catalog-literacy. This year at the start of the pandemic, they did an extra game and called it the "Bummer Game." And they just recently finished an extra Winter Game, also caused by the pandemic. I still have one last Boggle-type puzzle to figure out for the Winter Game. I've stared and stared at it but still haven't spotted the seven-letter word that I have to find.

I love Jane Smiley. I hadn't heard of this one. So glad you posted this. Nice puzzle too!

And now I have two books checked out. I just finished How the Penguins Saved Veronica, by Hazel Prior, and it was so good that I didn't want it to end! I suppose I could attempt a puzzle of it. :)

Enjoyed this puzzle. Thanks

Kristen - I just finished How The Penguins Saved Veronica, which I read because of what you wrote here. It was good! I liked how the author gave each person their own unique outlook on the world.

Excellent!
Amusingly, the branch I'll be at tomorrow has a large-print copy of Perestroika in Paris on the new books shelf. I may check it out, based on this puzzle. :)

I just finished How the Penguins Saved Veronica too, and I enjoyed it. I checked out the audio book, so I got it with the English accents. There was a crotchety sounding older woman reading the Veronica chapters that was hilarious.

that sounds charming!

Oh cool!

If anybody's interested, my favorite book so far this summer is "A Memory Called Empire" by Arkady Martine.
