Puzzle Description:

Until Next Year

At one point, we had 30 ice fishing huts in front of our house. The season ends Tuesday, and the huts have to be off the ice before the end of the month, when the ice will start getting soft.

I'm fascinated - what's an ice fishing hut?

The ice is about 20 inches/50 cm thick here in winter, and fishermen drill holes through the ice and drop fishing lines. To keep warm, they like a hut with a propane heater nearby (sometimes with a fishing hole inside). The huts range from the size of a large outhouse to ones with bunk beds. They drive out to them in trucks, ATVs or ski-doos.

Right here on the Ottawa River? I've lived here for more than 40 years and I never knew.

Actually, it is Callander Bay off Lake Nipissing, a couple of hundred miles west and a bit north of you. Web site https://blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org/allin/2019/01/19/crossing-the-ottawa-river-on-an-ice-bridge/ shows the ice bridge across the Ottawa River downstream from Ottawa, and also has a few ice huts in it. Neat-o! I was thinking, Gee, I didn't know there was a season for buying and delivering mobile homes. ^_^
