Bears? Piglets? Who knows.

Looked 'em up. They are widely used in scientific endeavors because of their ability to survive extremely harsh conditions, such as the moon. Jota's comment, I'm sure, is a reference to their colloquial names: water bears and moss piglets.

How fascinating. A strange combination of cute and ugly. I'm glad they are only the size of a grain of sand. Thanks for another fun puzzle, Brian.
