It was originally a two-color puzzle. When I added a touch of red on a whim, it seemed to make all the difference.
Black and white with a touch of red is another theme I'm keep coming back to (not so much in puzzles but in my artwork -- https://www.deboraheater.com/collections/122989).

Thank you, Teresa! Those are the very things I was striving for in this one. (Well, in most of my puzzles, actually, but this one appears to have been more successful than some others.)
