Good puzzle. Can be solved with edge logic.

I expected a soldier. I see him holding a weapon, not a football. Challenging solve.

#2 It was hard to start, but it helped for me, too. I used internal edge logic on the clue 17 in column 2, observing its affect on column 3. I think LL was enough after that.

C2: EL marks R28-37 black. LL solves the rest.

Found to be solvable with moderate lookahead by wombatilim.
