Little Bongo from Matt Groening's "Life in Hell" strip. I'm so old, I remember when the Life in Hell guy was called up to write a weekly cartoon show for Fox. What was it called again? Oh, that's right. The Simpsons.

I couldn't quite get rid of the need for edge logic, but I think the edge logic is pretty simple. Placing the 1 in R24 left of C17 would mean C17R20 is black, but the 11 or R20 would be broken up.

After LL & CL finishes the blue and gets some black;

Since all the columns from c12-c17 need one black pixel in either r24 or 25, the 11 in r25 must continue all the way to r16 to prevent a conflict in r24. So r25c12-16 must be black.

Found to be solvable with moderate lookahead by infrapinklizzard.

Andrew, I see we looked in the same spot, but yours would actually be deep lookahead as the 1 in r24 could be in either c5 or 6 without immediate conflict. When placing the 1, you would have to take into account both the 3 in that row and the 11 in r25 which would push it over the line.

I saw both the cartoon (in a free paper) and the shorts on the Tracey Ullman Show. Life in Hell had such distinguished company as Zippy the Pinhead.

I remember liking the "Life In Hell" books, back a zillion years ago. Does anybody else remember "Akbar and Jeff's Liposuction Hut -- Where the Elite Meet After They Eat So They Can Once Again Be Petite" ? Oh my....

I'm from Portland (Groening's home town) and they ran Life In Hell in a free weekly newspaper I read in college in the mid 80's. I had no idea that the strip was syndicated, so I was surprised to see Simpsons on Tracey Ullman, which had the same artwork style as the strip.
I couldn't figure out how a seemingly British tv show found out about Groening, as all the "local boy hits the big time" stories that followed never really mentioned that detail.
